There’s no arguing the fact that Match Restaurant and Cocktails inside of the FOUND:RE Hotel is one of the most engaging and eclectic spots in Downtown Phoenix to enjoy a beautifully orchestrated meal, cocktails or evening noshes with friends. Recently, I was invited to take part in a media event where we were treated to an official unveiling of the Match’s new breakfast menu.
Rise and Shine
First up, was a beautiful, light and refreshing Aperol spritzer cocktail. We were then treated to what has become one of the most sought-after specialty appetizers in the U.S. – avocado toast. The Match version is served on a substantial and tasty noble bread topped with avocado, tomato relish, a smattering of soft scrambled egg, capers, arugula and pistou. It was a wonderfully tasty avocado toast that combined the boldness of garlic in the pistou with the mild avocado flavor and soft texture of scramble egg. This is an engaging nosh and if you’re watching fat and calories, this selection is a great choice.
Next, was a light and fluffy egg white frittata that was also bursting with flavor and generously topped with greens. The frittata incorporated seasonal vegetables, feta cheese, watercress and was kissed with a bit of herb vinaigrette. Again, this is another breakfast entrée that skews to the side of healthy.
Our group was next presented with a beautiful basket of breakfast breads that included an assortment of freshly made croissants and muffins. Muffin selections include a blueberry muffin with lemon crumble and a cranberry orange muffin with a brown butter crumble. If you are more of breakfast traditionalist, go for the apricot and cheese Danish. Whatever you choose, your taste buds will thank you.
There was also a large skillet brought to the table with poached eggs over a generous bed of hash. The hash was tender and tasty and a wonderful inclusion in this dish and several others at Match.
We were then presented with a beautiful arrangement of breakfast sandwiches. Before you start thinking that it’s standard breakfast fare, think again. This is the Match version and I was entirely delighted with their upscale take on a breakfast favorite. This sandwich included a fried egg, cheddar cheese and thick-cut bacon with arugula and a garlic aioli all piled onto an English muffin. Our entire table raved about the sandwich! It was hearty, plus a delightful combination of textures and flavors.
Other breakfast entrees include hazelnut-crusted French toast, smoked salmon Benedict, soyrizo chilaquiles and the lemon ricotta pancakes. If our sampling of breakfast entrees was any indication, I’m certain that these additional entrees have flavor profiles that are equally as well constructed.
What is Breakfast without Dessert?
Finally, it was time to test drive some of the new desserts at Match. I chose the lemon tart with raspberries, a spectacular treat that was not too heavy and showed up with a fun and whimsical plating. The creamy cheesecake with strawberries was also outstanding and one of the best cheesecakes I’ve ever had a chance to try. This version was a little less dense and a slightly creamy.
Other desserts include rum caramel flan, chocolate mousse and a large assortment of digestives from around the world. Digestives are sweet style breakfast biscuits that are extremely popular, especially in Europe.
